Hmm, this isn't a problem with me and the library doing a select per se.
The problem here stems more from me (possibly implictly) opening more
descriptors than are handled by the library's select.

Maybe a more appropriate solution for this is some dynamic allocation of
fd_sets, at least within library routines.
