I've  done this  now, and  it seems  to be  a problem  in  the threads
library:

Maybe not so  coincidentally, this routine is in the  same file that I
couldn't  get  to  compile in  the  coda  version  4 mlwp  library  --
process.ss, only now it's in a separate package...
