Minor objection: (Some flavours of) Linux systems seem to use run-levels
to switch the X console on and off. On older NetBSD systems different from
both the Sun-style consoles (like NetBSD/Amiga; where the X server can 
cleanly shut out getty on the console) and wscons I've wished for some
mechanism like this.
