Subject: caveats of setting noatime on root disk?

I just converted my hpcmips machine over to a flash-based root disk.

It's occurred to me that I could set noatime on the root mount to
avoid a lot of writes to the flash, quite possibly extending the life
of the flash by a great deal.

Good idea? Bad idea? Doable but with annoying side effects?
