It turned out to be a memory problem. The system has EDO memory, which
doesn't have parity. One of the 4 32meg SIMMs was silently corrupting
data. I put in 4 new chips and I'm now running:

This is with the source from 4/13. I didn't want to believe it was a hardware
problem so I obstinately reinstalled 4 times before I replaced the memory. :-)
