BSDI apparently holds the "BSD" trademark, and they have in the past
made noises about it.
Personally, I hold that any such trademark ownership they claim to
hold is invalid, because "BSD" was in common use long before they got
to it. However, they've made noises about it in the past, and, if i
recall correctly, got at least FreeBSD to acknowledge that trademark.
(You'd have to ask the people there to be sure.) NetBSD never did, to
my knowledge, and as far as I have has no plans to.
So, while that's a nice statement that you make above, I'll believe it
when I see it. There's still ill will left around for
BSDI-the-company with some people from the last time they brought that
up...
