: I can't comment on the quality of OSS (okay, I can say I think it's "quirky"
: on BSD/OS), but I *CAN* say that I have a NM256AV laptop, and it works just
: fine as a soundblaster.

The problem is that the NM256AV comes in three flavors: sb compatible,
wss compatible and "native" mode.

The problem is that many newer laptops aren't installing the NM256AV
with any compatibility options. Thus the need for a "native" driver.
