I'm seeing similar things with PIONEER, DVD-ROM DVD-303, 1.06 attached to 
ncr53c875, when using precompiled or self compiled tstdvd i get

cd0(ncr0:6:0): phase change 2-3 16@018c45d4 resid=4.
cd0(ncr0:6:0):  Check Condition on CDB: 0xa4 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 08 00 00
    SENSE KEY:  Illegal Request
     ASC/ASCQ:  Illegal Field in CDB

tstdvd /dev/rcd0d says
GetASF failed
N/A, invalidating: Invalid argument
N/A, invalidating: Invalid argument
N/A, invalidating: Invalid argument

get AGID
