Followup: 1.4L also has this problem on the old Solo 2300. Note that this
1.4L CD has been used to boot and install on my thinkpad, and has also been
used on a handful of desktops for testing purposes...
*sigh*. Probably one of those "go into the bios and turn around three times"
bugs.
Plain old 1.4 seems to work fine.
