Move the machines close together and connect via a cross-over cable.
If it works now, start pulling some *good* quality cat5.  Keep it at
least a few feet from power and florescent lights.  The beldon cat-5 I
ran around the house seems to do fine for 100base-TX.  I never
bothered to rent a cable tester, but I was pretty careful about
getting the pairing right and not putting *any* sharp bends in the
cables.
