While you're working on file, how about doing something about its
glacial speed?

/bin/ls: ELF 32-bit MSB executable, SPARC, version 1, statically linked, stripped

15 seconds?! That's completely outrageous, IMO. (ktracing reveals
that the time is spent reading and processing the magic-numbers
database.)
The machine the above test was done on is a headless SPARC ELC running
NetBSD/sparc 1.4J, the sup of 1999-08-13 (with my patches, none of
which affect anything under src/usr.bin/file). Nothing else was
running at the time (except for background stuff like update(8)).
