Ooops, this is a good one (it works now). Thanks to all who pointed this
out.

Why is this needed? This system never had 1.4 installed, it's all -current
and has been 1.4k from the first day I formatted the disk. I think a
completely current system should be able to run a kernel without any
COMPAT_* options!
