I'm using 1.4, so the DMA patches are in there already.

I did try using a local pine client. It is actually a bit faster, but not by
a whole lot. It could be network/client-related as others have suggested,
but without more evidence I can't be too sure. I'll try to gather some more
evidence and report it.

What version of NetBSD are you using ?
If it's 1.3 you can try the IDE DMA patches, on modern disks this typically
bumps the transfert rate from 4MB/s to more than 10.
If it's 1.4, then it's already there.
