I bet a sandwich this comes down to the `old' Mach-style pmap locking
protocol (i.e., the old, simple-recommended Mach hac which vax, pmax,
etc. used until it broke mdsetimage, because Jason decided on a
different protocol for hp300 and mandated it for netbsd).
(To be collected at Stanford. I guess that means Bill gets it...)
