I think you mean 'soft updates'.  Last I recall, someone (Frank van
der Linden?) had it mostly working with a not-so-recent -current but
hadn't had the time to update it for -current.

This would be really cool to have for 1.4, but it's probably too late
if it's not pretty much ready to go.
