I was already afraid that I was pretty much off-track. Ah well, that's what 
can happen if you first ask a FreeBSD-user for advise on what tool to use and 
by assuming FreeBSD and NetBSD are still very close relatives. I compiled
cdd from the pkg system and it works out of the box. Silly me.

It's  good to hear though that NetBSD wins again wrt elegance (that's always
been my ammo as a loner in a FreeBSD/Linux world)...
