Subject: 8 character max username with nsswitch?

It seems as though nsswitch now chokes on usernames longer than 8 characters.
I'm using a -current as of Jan 18th, with the default nsswitch.conf file,
and users who have usernames longer than 8 characters cannot log in.
Was this a design feature, or a bug? (I can't see the limitation documented
anywhere, and pre-nsswitch allows long usernames)
