[Hey, is there a better place for me to whinge about this than here?
I'd hate to bother people too unnecessarily ;-)]

Apparently this is not port-specific, so one other told me...

Our story thus far:

	- Kernel from 23 November 1998 works with ppp, but has neither
PPP_BSDCOMP nor PPP_DEFLATE compiled in. No compression, which
is explaining the "CCP nak/rej" messages I've been having for
	  a while.

	- Either EGCS or the kernel is not addressing PPP correctly,
	  as I have done:
	  	rm -fr /sys/arch/sparc/compile/STARWOLF
		config STARWOLF
		cd ../compile/STARWOLF
		make depend && make

and pppd is no longer even making connections with a -current
kernel. Messages are at the end of this letter.

	- I grabbed the 19990103 snapshot hoping that this would cure
all the ills, but not so. Maybe with the GENERIC kernel it
would work, but I'd like to rebuild my kernel and have it
	  work.

	- I am _not_ a networking/communications guru.

Here's the messages, in two parts:

	1. What pppd thinks is happening [/^pppd:/]
	2. What the kernel thinks is happening [/^kern:/]
[again, don't let kernel: throw you.]
