I don't know what the right way is, but I always set it to the FQDN...

Recent versions of /etc/rc.conf say:
# the NIS domain name (also formerly known as Yellow Pages); not in any way
# related to Internet domain names.
domainname=""                           # if blank, use /etc/defaultdomain

You can probably delete your /etc/defaultdomain file...
