Where does XF86 write errors?

If I ktrace X, I get a log file showing lots of very informative error
messages written to stderr.

I don't see any of them anywhere.

('ktrace X'.  No xinit or anything.  ARGH.)

Are there special options (other than XSERVER) you need to have an X server
run?
