Actually, a couple of other things to look at:

* Look at the network statistics with `netstat -i' on both machines,
  and see if there are an increasing number of ierrs or oerrs.

* Make sure you don't have one machine configured for full-duplex and
  the other half-duplex.  This causes late collisions and the usual
  symptom is that packets are randomly dropped at the network layer.
