I changed it, because this part of the code leads to a lot of problem.
We need specific DMA support for each controller type. Just using DMA
because the controller says it can do DMA will not work in the general
case, we're not sure it has been properly configured by the BIOS (and I
can tell you sometimes it has not been properly configured).
It was working for you, but you were luky :)

I'll see if I can find more info about you controller, and eventually
I'll ask you to test some patches.
