Oh, duh.  Now I realize why I'm always finding .depend files.

I actually sort of dislike this; I think 'make depend' should mean 'figure
out dependancies', but I guess it's overloaded now.

True.  On the other hand, I seem to recall having problems with 'make build'
myself.
