Actually, an Ethernet "repeater" is a device that regenerates the
Ethernet signal, *without* doing store & forward, collisions and
all. Your standard 10-base-T hub is a repeater. They induce no
delay at all and are truly invisible. Most common version of these
that I've seen are the Ethernet-fibre-Ethernet variety, that give
you extra distance for a single Ethernet cable (speed of light in
copper is rather less than the speed of light in glass).
