V4, I think. Is there one you'd suggest?

I'll check. But as I recall, it was after an upgrade post 1.2 (like to
1.2G or so) that I started having problems.

Maybe we enabled BINARY mode negotiation?

I'll try pulling down the 1.1 sources (going WAY back) and see what
happens.
