(rpc.)statd is the NFS state daemon. Lockd handles file locking; statd
I think keeps state on NFS.

More to the point, statd keeps track of outstanding remote requests and
tries to re-establish contact with remote systems when the server comes
back up.

 * I saw this, and I've been wondering. The answer was that we don't ship
 * with a statd. But what is /usr/sbin/rpc.statd? It comes up when you do a
 * man on statd. ??
