since an upgrade from 1.2G to 1.3alpha '/usr/sbin/mountd' (yes, I removed
/sbin/mountd ;) chokes on /etc/exports entries like

/u              -alldirs -network 192.168.1 -mask 255.255.255.0

-- domain names are fine for -network.

This is contrary to the behaviour documented in exports(5).

My only link to the net is through a 14k4 modem so I removed the access
limitations, but it took me some hours to find out the reason for the
hanging.
