Hmpf.

I wrote a few days ago, saying how my VAX running 1.3_ALPHA was so
unstable (SEGV in kernel mode) as to be non-bootable. After all the
feedback I got from people who don't have this problem, including some
with KA650 machines like mine, I had to dig deeper into the thing.

Well, I finally got lucky.

It turns out that all I had to do was change "nfs_server=YES" to
"nfs_server=NO" in /etc/rc.conf -- as long as I don't let it start
mountd and nfsd, I can do anything I like with it, and it's stable.
I've done another complete "make build", I've built Emacs and used it
quite a bit, and generally beat on it rather hard, with no glitches.
With NFS service enabled, it only takes seconds from the starting of
those two daemons until the crash. (With an earlier -current, from
sometime in July, it would boot up OK, but would crash as soon as I
attempted to log into it over the network, when it would bomb out
immediately.)

As of this morning, I'm now running 1.3_BETA on it, and it's happy.

(Oh, and yes, I've long since removed the old NFS daemons from /sbin.)
