I deleted the old patches -ad -ae -af and then rm -rf'd work and all went
swimmingly after that.

I'm certain that I got the package by supping pkgsrc. What happens is that
when fixes are made, the old patches hang around. I tried adding -delete to
the supfile, and that eliminated old patches ; )  but lots of other stuff
is gone as well, elm msql and who knows what else ;(
