i'd prefer to know

 * why this worked at one point (if it was never supposed to)
 * why it no longer works (and is this the correct behavior)
 * if its current state is considered "fixed" or "broken" or "better"

and

 * why you need the loopback interface configured to ping machines
   that are obviously remote...

but maybe that's just me...
