Nah.  I almost never run newfs on a Unix filesystem.  I think newfs
is a sharp tool -- short of making it interactive ("Hey, I found
a XYZ fileystem here -- overwrite?") I don't think there is a lot
that can be done to make it safer.

I'd have thought the reverse situation was more problematic anyway
("Hey, I found a Unix filesystem already -- you want me to overwrite
it?)
