It's not that "mode 2 is apparently available." Either mode 1 or mode
2 is supported by a given machine. Mode 2 isn't "apparently
available," but the code which does the PCI probe is dumb enough that
it can be confused into _thinking_ that mode 2 is available when it
isn't.
I seem to recall reports of this problem with some Compaqs, but i
don't remember any more details anymore.
If anybody reading this is actually experiencing the problem, by all
means speak up!
