No, I hadn't done that.

pppd was refusing to install a default route; named wasn't able to service
requests and routed was bitching up a storm about not being able
to get from here to there.

Currently, I have routed turned off, and mygate is

207.33.232.91

(i.e. this end of the ppp interface).

I have reinstalled the defaultroute option in /etc/ppp/options, and
deleted the route add/delete default statements from /etc/ppp/ip-{up,down}.

I'm really a software toolsmith and a musician by trade, but nobody really
needs a software toolsmith much, and the music industry is so cutthroat
that it would probably do me in.  So I do systems administration on the
side as a hobby.  Funny that my hobby finds more work than either of my
professions...
