Bounce buffers were *added* recently.  They work by data copies.  (On
the 386, anyway.)  Prior to that, if you had more than 16M, your system
just panicked.

A 24MB ISA bus system with bounce buffers works faster than a 16MB system,
assuming your load is more appropriate to 24MB than to 16MB.  But a 24MB
PCI bus system would work a whole lot faster.
