I am talking about 2.0 -- everything you are talking about is OLD boot
code. The new boot code does things totally differently.

I'm hardly sure the new code will do anything different for you, but
we are not maintaining the old code so any fixes have to be applied to
the NEW code.

The new code is in i386/stand on any -current box.
