Right. That's because your Sun 3 has lower default ulimits than
many other systems. That seems reasonable to me, too; in everyday
use you probably don't want to be thoughtlessly running programs
that immediately grab and touch 32 MB of memory.

I would just put the ulimit in your .profile on the Sun system,
since you seem to have a reasonably capable machine and do run
`larger' (for a Sun 3) tasks on it.
