You are sure about that? The first time after boot the X server always
occupied ttyv1 because the "getty" wasn't running when "xdm" was started
in "rc.local". I solved this by adding "vt05" to the arguments passed
to the server in "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers".

Because if you use "startx" all "getty" processes are already running.
