There's no way around it, no.

The problem with that is that next time you sup, instead of just
getting the set of changes, which will total perhaps a few megabytes,
you'll have to pull down the entire source tree, which is over a
hundred megabytes.

No. You want to import, which means it should go somewhere other
than a current checkout. You'll need a current checkout from your
own tree later on in order to merge.
For removals, see my script. I just do a find on the current checkout
and the tree to be imported, and compare the two lists to find
files that need to be deleted.
