I think it means the if_de driver detected you have either
	a 21041 with a new-format SROM (most likely, since you have BNC)
	a 21142
	a 21143

and therefore decided you have an SIA interface.
But then the hardware doesn't grok what the software tells it.
It might be  easier to diagnose if you  built a kernel with DIAGNOSTIC.

However, Matt Thomas may well diagnose this just from the description given.
