Keep in mind that some parts of the source tree also rely on 'helper' 
applications..that is, tools that get built at compile time to help
with the compile.  'sh' and 'gcc' are prominent examples of this (a
number of 'games', and 'tn3270' stuff does this as well).  This makes
building a complete distribution a PITA...I've been working on locating
and working around all these problems in the cross-compile setup I'm
working on, but it's really sub-optimal.  

So, when planning the 'grand reorganization' of the makefiles, be sure to
think about how different host tools can be referenced when needed
(i.e, HOST_AS, HOST_LD, HOST_GCC, etc).
