One of the design requirements for a devfs must be persistence, and
support for rename(), chown(), and chmod() (at least).
Personally, I'm not particularly in favour of MAKEDEV. HP-UX 'insf'
is a lot smarter about making device files that actually match your
hardware.
What Solaris does is unspeakable. :-(
