A mailing list host I help run handles mainly digestified mailing
lists, typical message size 40kb

There are a number of "popular" hosts on several of the lists, which
have ~40+ recipients each.

How can qmail *possibly* save enough bandwidth elsewhere to make up
the additional 1.5MB of traffic it generates per digest?

I'd consider installing qmail on that host *if and only if* it
adaptively chose to combine multiple RCPTs to the same host if the
message was larger than some configuration parameter.
