Mostly buffer cache? Plus any other little bits of memory the kernel
needed to grab while booting?

I have my machine set to 15% buffer cache. This is what I see:

NetBSD 1.2 (MINDBENDER) #403: Thu Nov 7 23:58:48 PST 1996
    michaelv@MindBender.serv.net:/u/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/MINDBENDER
CPU: Pentium (GenuineIntel 586-class CPU)
real mem = 66715648
avail mem = 53440512
using 2430 buffers containing 9953280 bytes of memory
[etc....]
