IMHO, using mail over NFS is one quick way to loose, since as far as I know
   even using dot locking isn't reliable.

it is possible, but you can't do it sanely with a single file.  you need
to use a directory structure.  qmail has support for a `Maildir' facility
that apparently works over NFS, without (statd-like) locking.
