Hi Michael,
I've got NetBSD 1.2/i386, XFree 3.2 and BSDi Netscape 3.0 and Java works
fine for me. I havn't used it enough to know how reliable it is (java
wise I mean), but it loads and runs the java applet on my page no problem.
I did have to setup the nls that they warn about, but that shouldn't
affect Java (just clipboard). I've got a fully loaded NetBSD and XFree
though, so I don't know if that might be part of it.
