Huh?  It's possible on _every_ port -- just pass it in to the booted
kernel.

Yes, it's possible to get the name of the booted kernel at any time
from alpha firmware, but last i saw i didn't do that, ever.  Also, as
previously noted, there are problems with this:

	(1) what if your kernel isn't in your root partition (e.g.
	    nfs boot), and

	(2) what do you do when/if it's renamed.
