This is what my hp319's diskless configuration looks like...

basalt (thorpej) /u3/granite 134% ls -l
total 16405
    1 drwxr-xr-x  17 root  wheel       512 Jul 14 19:25 root/
16404 -rw-r--r--   1 root  wheel  16777216 Sep  8 02:08 swap
basalt (thorpej) /u3/granite 135% 

>From /etc/exports:

/u3             -maproot=root -alldirs XENO-SJ

XENO-SJ is a netgroup that, among other things, includes granite.og.org.

Seems to work just fine...
