I was succesful replacing both instances of 

case PCI_PRODUCT_3COM_3C590:

in dev/pci/if_ep_pci.c by

case PCI_PRODUCT_3COM_3C590:
case 0x9001:

You will need to set media type by DOS-based utility. Someone with
access to refence material should add card names, other PCI device id's
and generate change-request PR.
