I don't get it. I'm wondering what we gain from this move. It's not
unreasonable for us to define "unix" or "$ARCH" at appropriate times.
If we fail to define "unix", there's currently a LOT of stuff out there
which is going to break at compile time, not the least of which is
X11R6.
