I can't speak for DOS machines, but the Mac version of Netscape is
SOCKS-aware, so running sockd on the firewall machine makes a very
convenient http/ftp/gopher firewall.  Netscape doesn't do telnet, but
that can be done by telnetting to the firewall and from there to the
outside world.  (Annoying but workable.)  Maybe someone has written a
SOCKS-aware telnet client for DOS...
